Apples! The term ‘raw food’ is fast becoming a popular phrase. As more and more people opt for a more natural existence, many of them are realizing the remarkable benefits of a raw food diet. Many families are opting for the raw way of life too and that means that their kids become a part of the adventure as well. However, there is also concern as to whether or not a raw diet is best for growing kids.

Dr. David Wolfe, one of the world’s leading authorities on nutrition, states, “Yes. A carefully chosen raw-food diet containing organic fruits, vegetables, sprouts, nuts, seeds, superfoods, and herbs with appropriate whole food supplements works beautifully for both children and older adults.”

There are guidelines for everything we do in life whether we want to believe it or not. It is the same with raising raw kids.

In essence it is balance that is needed to give children raised on a raw diet all they need to be healthy. Yes, there are those whose children have been malnourished due to a raw diet. However these are parents who have not the proper research and are not aware of the guidelines. They are also usually the ones who are just starting out themselves with a raw diet.

It is important if you are raising raw kids that you understand how to supplement and provide all the nutrient rich foods needed for the amounts of Vitamin D, B-12, Choline, Vitamin K, Iron, and DHA that a lot of raw foodies tend to be deficient in due to lack of education. There are many rich sources like leafy greens, raw seeds, sprouts, and even the sun that will give you what you need; and in some cases there may be the need for supplements depending on how the food your kids consume if grown.

One of the wisest things any parent can do when raising kids on a raw diet is to progress towards the percentage you feel is best for your child as far as consumption of raw food goes. There is not law that says it has to be 100% nor is there one that says it doesn’t. My own kids still like to drink organic raw milk from a nearby dairy and organic eggs from the local Amish.

Another smart thing to do is to watch for changes in the children. Be observant!! Look for dark sunken eyes, weight loss that is not normal or appears t be unhealthy, allergy issues, too many colds, fatigue, and other tell tell signs that something is just not right. If you suspect anything then go have them tested for deficiencies. You can never be too sure just by looking.

You also want to be sure to include your child in as much of the planning and preparation process as possible. Let them choose recipes they may like and allow age appropriate preparation of meals. Kids love to feel as if they helped in some way to contribute to the family. Even if they act like they don’t. Leafy greens are very important too and if your children don’t like them, hide them in smoothies.

The bottom line here is that raw food consumption is safe for children. As long as they are healthy, strong, and happy a raw diet will not hurt them. It is actually one of the healthiest choices you can make for your child.
